Giving Thanks In Our Neighborhoods

Through our program called POrCH (Promethean Outreach and Community Help), Prometheans (Prometheus employees) and Neighbors (residents) participate in volunteer opportunities year-round. And this Thanksgiving, we’re giving thanks through service activities up and down the West Coast. Here’s a peek at what’s going on:

Our South Shore Apartments is hosting a Winter Neighbor Party, where neighbors can purchase a rubber ducky to participate in several Rubber Ducky Races down the property's lagoon. Neighbors whose ducks win these races will win one of several prizes donated by local and preferred vendors. All proceeds will go to benefit the Taylor Family Foundation, an organization that hosts special camps and provides services for children with life threatening diseases, such as leukemia, Crohn's disease, and HIV/AIDs.

Habitat for Humanity Project – Beaverton, Oregon – November 10, 2015

This season, the Prometheans at Emerald Place and Birch Point Apartments along with their neighbors (residents) teamed up with the West Willamette Habitat for Humanity. The teams helped to construct homes for low income families in need of a warm place to live as the weather gets colder. Our teams learned how to put up sheet rock, doors, windows.

Love Rocks Project – Beaverton and Portland, Oregon – December 2, 3, 4, 10 and 15, 2015

Our Oregon communities are also teaming up with Love Rocks, a local nonprofit. Love Rocks was started by two parents whose children were killed while playing in a pile of leaves, and in spite of their grief these parents wanted to make the world a better place for other children. By purchasing kits to make “love rocks” to hand out to those you love, the money raised will fund parks for children. Our apartment communities will serve wine and appetizers and have the supplies to make a love rock. They’ll also have the Love Rock kits available to purchase.

Make a Wish’s “Brave The Bay” Event – San Francisco, California — December 5, 2015

This holiday season, Prometheans from throughout the Bay Area will participate in the “Brave the Bay” athletic events that appeal to them. From a Santa Walk to a Fun Run, Plunge in the Bay or Cable Carr Pull, all funds raised are donated directly to the Make a Wish Foundation. Wishes are more than gifts or singular events in time – making a wish come true impacts kids, volunteers, donors sponsors and more. For wish kids, making their wish come true can give them courage to comply with their medical treatments and parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic.

“Loaves and Fishes” Event – San Jose, California – November 18, 2015

This year, 29 volunteers from our home office accounting and finance teams participated in the “Loaves and Fishes” grocery program event. In partnership with Second Harvest Bank, Prometheans provided full grocery bags to about 165 families. The bags are filled with nutritionally balanced items such as rice, beans, peanut butter, tuna fish, eggs, milk and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Happy Holiday season to you and your family!
