Layer it Up
Everyone knows that winter means layers —from cashmere sweaters, fleece, and cozy scarves. You take care to bundle up, so why not lavish your apartment with layers, too? No matter what décor you have, layering several area rugs on top each other is a chic and creative way to add warmth to your home. And best of all, you don’t have to be a designer to pull it off. All you need are a few easy tips.
The simplest way to get a cozy, layered look is to start with a plain sisal or jute area rug on the bottom and add a pop of texture or color with a second area rug on top. Or, if you’re adventurous and want to create more intrigue, try mixing several colors and patterns by layering multiple rugs together. There’s not a lot of right or wrong to this bohemian-chic look – so you don’t have to stress about messing up. Of course, area rugs can be found at most leading décor stores, but here are a few suggestions that caught our eye.
Both the Kasbah Wool and Raid Wool rugs are soft underfoot and easy on the eyes. Handcrafted in New Zealand, these luxe gems can be found at West Elm in a range of sizes and prices, from $199 - $1299.
Crafted in a rich mix of woolen knots, weaves, and textures, the Neutral Texturas area rug from CB2 also comes in a range of sizes and prices, from $349-$699.
And, of course, you can always count on World Market to have an interesting assortment of area rugs, including the Kilim Bordered Flokati for $599 and a variety of trendy Brazilian Cowhide rugs for $349.
