Put Summer Away: Fall Closet Organization Tips You Haven’t Tried Yet
The change in weather can happen suddenly, and some of us are left chilly in sundresses and shorts. It’s time to put summer away and swap out our warm weather clothes for sweaters and jackets. There’s just one little problem – where is that jacket you loved wearing? And what happened to your favorite jeans?
Deny the urge to head off to the store to purchase a whole new warm wardrobe. Instead, take a little time for fall organization. Here’s a few tried and true closet organization tips:
Step 1: Give Your Closet a Scrub
If you’re going to be going through your closet, now is a great time to also give your closet a nice deep clean. And we don’t mean vacuuming or dusting around the piles of clothing. The first step is to clear out your closet entirely. Move everything out and place it somewhere that is easy for sorting, like your bed or living room floor. Give your closet a vacuum and dust, including hard to get to spots like the baseboards or top shelves and cabinets.
Step 2: It’s to Take Inventory
Next, it’s time to be honest with yourself about the clothes you’ve emptied from the closet. Make sure everything is out of the closet and you’re able to sort through it. Empty out storage bins and move them to the side, so you can use them later to store your summer items. Next, start sorting through the items and making piles:
• To keep
• To store for next year
• The “maybe” pile
• To donate
• To get rid of
While you’re going through all your items, if you haven’t worn an item in over a year it’s probably time to get rid of it. If you’re unsure, put it in the maybe pile and revisit it after you’ve sorted everything else.
Step 3. Find a Space for Summer Items.
Once you have everything narrowed down into piles, it’s time to start the actual organizing. If you have limited space, this step is key. Take all of the summer items you want to keep and find a space for them. Good places for out of season clothing are storage bins or on the top shelf of your closet.
Step 4. Organize the Rest.
Now that you’ve purged and removed items, you’re left with the seasonal items you’ll be wearing for the next few months. It’s time to put them back in your closet, and here is where you can have fun with organization! Place them back into the closet however you like and feel best organized. Some popular ways to organize your closet include sorting them via the type of item or by color. You can also organize by work and play clothes, etc.
It may seem like a lot of work, but we’re pretty confident a few hours spent cleaning and organizing your closet will be time well spent. After all, what’s the point of having the latest and most in-style fall items if you can’t find them in your closet? So turn up the tunes, rock out and organize to get ready for what’s sure to be the best fall and winter yet.
