Ahh, the amazing power of herbs; some are truly magical and highly effective medicines. The folks at Portland Apothecary are native plant nerds, wildcrafters, gardeners, nature’s biggest fan club, activists and believers in a new kind of preventative healthcare. What began as a greeny gardening obsession for owners Elie Barausky and Kristen Dilley has turned into their dream job. Working with organic farmers, local gatherers and sourcing top quality herbs, they create remedies ranging from tinctures and teas to artisanal soaps, salts, scrubs and medicinal honey (great for allergies).

They also offer something called a “Season Share”. Each season, you can purchase shares of handcrafted medicinals that will help you move through the seasons with health and awareness. For instance, the Summer share includes remedies that cool down your system, others that will calm weathered skin, promote circulation, while at the same time including some remedies to help you wind down. The goal is to keep you feeling great naturally, and of course, to keep you from getting sick to begin with!

What could be sweeter than a few dozen baby goats playing king of the mountain? Head over to Harley Farms Goat Dairy in Pescadero to witness all the goaty goodness for yourself. Harley offers a delicious variety of artisan gourmet goat cheeses, local honey and other goodies for a picnic at the beach. They are known for their chevre decorated with flower petals. You can eat these petals! These varieties of calendula, borage, viola, salvia, pinks and cornflower have centuries of kitchen and medicinal history.

Tours of Harley Farms are by reservation only, but you can stop by any day between 11am to 5pm. It’s located at 205 North Street in Pescadero, about 15 miles south of Half Moon Bay. I always stop by Arcangeli Grocery Co. (also known as Norm’s Market) on Stage Road, the main drag in Pescadero and pick up fresh artichoke bread, too. The smell is so heavenly when you walk into the store. Oh, and be sure to buy at least 2 loaves so you can stuff your face on the way home and still have an extra to share.

Looking for a cool place to wander around and sample some tasty cheese? Head over to the open air market at the Milk Pail in Mountain View for an insane variety of imported cheeses, dairy products, plus fine chocolates and other fresh local goodies. This place feels like the antidote to big chain stores. If you have a special hard-to-find item, just ask the owner, Steve Rasmussen and he will do his best to hunt it down for you! Saturdays are a great time to stop by for tastings, when Rasmussen says “It’s a culinary Disneyland and people who really enjoy food like to come for the adventure.” Large tables are set out for the open air market where you can wander and graze to discover the perfect cheese (yep, they have ice cream, too!). The Milk Pail began around 30 years ago as a drive-thru dairy place; they have since added fresh fruits and veggies plus fresh craft-baked breads and pastries from local bakers. It’s picnic time, people. And then it’s nap time. The Milk Pail is located near the corner of California Street and San Antonio Road.

is the ultimate interesting and artistic coffee table book. It’s written by Viennese designer Michael Embacher, who himself has one of the world's greatest collection of bicycles. His love of two-wheeled life shines through (he has, in fact, ridden all 100 bikes profiled in the book). More than anything though, the book captures the stunning simplicity of a century of bicycles with lovely photography. And, whether you’re a cycling enthusiast or not, it’s a beautiful thing.

Inspired by the circulatory systems of plants and other organic forms, this wearable tech art is a fashion geek must-have. The design group was started by a couple of undergrads who met at MIT and soon brought their love of architecture, math and biology to the art of jewelry making via the 3D Digital printer. Trying to do the right thing isn’t always the easy thing, that’s not new. But Bronfman, along with Jeffrey Solomon, saw the book as opportunity serve as a mentor for those aspiring to bring about positive change in the world. They profile 18 fascinating social entrepreneurs who made their mark with little more than an idea and the passion to see it through. The book is inspiring, easy to read and chock full of lessons for us all. And just in case you’re worried about the authors’ pedigrees, don’t be. Bronfman, former head of Seagram’s, oversees more than $220 million in philanthropic work around the world annually. And Solomon, the president of the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies, is a widely recognized expert on charitable giving. Get inspired and make that change.

It’s a social network for neighbors with the straightforward goal of building stronger, safer, better neighborhoods. On the site you can meet your neighbors, quickly report a break-in, send out an alert for a lost dog, share recommendations (like babysitters) and generally do things that good neighbors do. And they do a good job of protecting neighbor privacy online. Two years in and over 8,000 neighborhoods in all 50 states signed up they’re going strong. It’s great to know that good, old-fashioned neighborliness is alive and well.
